Suddenly a shadow launched itself out from behind some bushes right at Willem's face. Its claws were spread out like the wings of a crow ready to dive, with the clear intention of peeling his skin off in strips. Luckily Willem's mind seemed to sharpen even further in times of crisis; he'd spotted the creature as it prepared its lunge, giving him enough time to prepare himself. Just as he was about to swing the axe at the creature, it suddenly lurched upward to avoid the sharp edge and continued soaring over his head. It landed ten meters away and turned around, preparing to attack again.

Willem spun around with the axe extended, putting as much force behind it as he could muster. The beast had been expecting his attack, but the range of the axe threw him off and he wasn’t able to move away in time. He felt a crunch as the axe connected with the beast's side. He pushed, feeling the resistance before something tore, and the blade cut deep into the body. But he kept pushing until the momentum forced him to take a step forward, driving the axe further inside. When he tried to pull it back to hack at the thing again, he couldn't budge it. He saw that the top part of the axe had embedded itself into the monster's chest. The wound oozed something dark instead of blood, and Willem realized he'd severed the main artery when he cleaved into its insides. He released the weapon as the thing thrashed wildly in its death throes before finally collapsing.

Panting heavily, Willem stared wide-eyed at his kill. He hadn't just imagined it, had he? What he had just done was definitely superhuman. He glanced down at the lifeless carcass, not daring to believe. Slowly his shock turned into exaltation. His injuries seemed irrelevant now. He had defeated that monstrosity! The elation soon gave way to horror as he remembered where he was. He scanned the surroundings for signs of more beasts, his eyes darting around while clutching his knife in sweaty hands. However, none had showed up. Either they couldn’t hear or weren’t interested enough in his kill to investigate.

He was still panting heavily, but not from the fight this time. It had been close, and he once again realized he really needed to get back to town, pronto. It wouldn’t do to keep getting surprised by these things like this. He walked toward the creature, his newfound confidence slightly dented, and retrieved his axe from where it still had stuck itself, imbedded in its chest.

He studied the carcass. It was one of those small demons he had first seen in the distance before he noticed the incursion. Up close, the resemblance to a human child was striking, if you ignored the bloodshot eyes, sharp teeth, and long, crooked claws. Its dark brown skin had an uncanny texture, almost like scales. But the thing that creeped him out the most was the stench of decay emanating from it.
